Tasting Jakarta... Sightseeing!

The mermaid was pretty occupied for a week as her friend from Shanghai came to visit her in Singapore, then they flew to Jakarta to taste the flavor of the city ;).

Where did I take my friend for such a short visit in my hometown? We only had 3 days to go around the city, definitely not enough to see everything! Anyway, as a good host, I tried my best to show him some of the interesting places in town.

Jakarta is a city that never sleeps. It has a reputation for being a crowded, polluted and a city in which the traffic would make you feel like killing yourself… or… if you wanted to be positive, it is a city in which you’ll have plenty of time reading your favorite books or (thank to the digital age) browsing the Internet via your mobile phone/ blackberry (note: the latter is very popular in Jakarta now… it’s spreading like a virus!) or chatting with your friends over the phone while you’re trapped in traffic jam! :D

I warned my friend for the traffic, but to my surprise, when we landed in Jakarta, there was no traffic in the city! Wow… this is weird. Then I remember that it was actually a public holiday on Thursday, so a lot of people went on vacation as it could be considered as a long weekend. Ah.. no wonder!!!

Every time my friends from overseas come to visit me in Jakarta, I adjust the itinerary according to their interests. Some people are interested in arts, while others don’t. So, I wouldn’t take someone who are not interested in arts, to go to an art exhibition, for example. Not when we have time constraints.

This time, my friend from Shanghai loves photography and party. Aha! ;) To fulfill his interest in photography, I took him to visit the old port area, which is called “Pelabuhan Sunda Kelapa”. This old port remains a bustling hub inter-island trade until today. One could enjoy the beautiful Bugis phinisi schooners, the world’s last wind-powered sailing fleet used for trade, parking at the port with a number of workers lifting up stacks of food, powders, etc in and out the graceful phinisi.

It was such a sunny day, perfect to take some shoots to capture the busy life of the old port. When you’re tired and feel like drinking something fresh, stop by at the nearest “warung” (street stall) and ask for “Teh Botol”. It’s the most famous drink in Indonesia. As I said to my friend, “If Americans love Coke, Indonesians love Teh Botol”. Hehehe… Teh Botol literary means “tea in the bottle”. It’s so fresh and it tastes sweet. I’m addicted to this drink, undoubtedly .

In the afternoon, we strolled down “Jalan Surabaya”, a street where one could find random stuff from your granny time. It’s an open-air antique market located in residential area. I love to check out the shops here as sometimes I could find nice wooden boxes or… a vintage clutch! It’s also a heaven for those who love puppets and anything made of brass.
If you decided to spend your afternoon here, don’t forget to use your bargaining skills ;). Try to bargain half price down and see what the seller says. Usually they will lower their price, then compromise with you . My friend loved a wooden statue, the seller asked for Rp 350,000. I bargained for Rp 150thou. He went down to Rp 300thou. I said, “Nope.. Rp 200thou, that’s it”. He didn’t want to compromise in that price. I told my friend to just hangout nearby the shop and had a chit chat for a short while… not long after, the seller came to us with the statue already wrapped in a plastic bag! He said, “Ok… I give you at Rp 210thou, ok?”
I was sure that he would’ve agreed with Rp200thou, but giving Rp10thou for a “charity” wouldn’t hurt, would it?

A visit to Jakarta wouldn’t be complete without visiting our National Monument. It’s the icon of Jakarta. You could go up to the top of the tower where you could see Jakarta from up above, but the line takes usually 2 hours :p. From there, we took a bajaj (a public transportation, similar to tuk-tuk in Thailand) and headed to the Istiqlal Mosque to take some nice shots of the mosque. Bajaj is the noisiest public transportation, I think. And... you'll be shaking all over when you're in this vehicle. Try it yourself, then you'll know what I mean! :D

When we entered the mosque, there were a bunch of school children hanging around the gate. As soon as they saw my friend, they ran after him and scream, “Mister.. mister!!! How are you, Mister? What’s your name?”. Before I realized, more than 30 kids wanted to shake his hands already surrounded him! Hahaha… so cute! Well, if you’re a foreigner traveling in Indonesia, be ready for this “friendly attack” from kids. You’ll get it everywhere. Trust me.

Right across the mosque is… the Cathedral ;). So, if you’re into photography, you could take some beautiful shots of these two religious places without having to spend hours to commute from one spot to another! All you need to do is just crossing the street! :D

If you have time, visit Taman Mini Indonesia Indah. It’s a miniature park of Indonesia. You’ll encounter some of country’s traditional houses as well as samplings of more than 250 cultures from different provinces. I personally love it here as even for a local, I could learn so many things about the culture of each province. Also, if you’re lucky, you might enjoy traditional dance performances here, too. I still remember once I performed here when I was in school ;).

For museum lovers, apart from visiting the National Museum, you can go to Fatahillah Square and spoil yourself discovering 3 city’s most interesting museums in the area: Jakarta History Museum, Puppet Museum, Fine Arts & Ceramics Museum). Too bad we didn’t have time to visit all these museums! Maybe next time! And oh… Fatahillah Square is also one of the favorite spots for photo shoots in Jakarta. It’s located in the old area of the city, called “Kota”, which simply means “town”. It’s also a china town area and during the Chinese New Year, some streets are decorated with beautiful red lanterns. Pretty.

Check out my next post for an experience of tasting the food and the night life in Jakarta! ;)

This article on The Best Job in The World appears in Investor Daily newspaper today :)

Mermaid on The Beach!

The mermaid went to the beach in Sentosa Island two days in a row to promote The Best Job in The World to the beach lovers. On the first day, she couldn't shoot any footage because it was already too dark and the music at the KM8 beach bar was too loud (fyi, I don't have a handycam, so I use my pocket camera to record the video... even the video that I submitted for The Best Job in The World!).

The second day, the mermaid went to Siloso Beach where the famous Cafe Del Mar is located. She interviewed some people there and had a little chat with them about the Great Barrier Reef and... of course, about The Best Job in The World! ;)

Wanted to see how happy she was to be on the beach? Check out that big smile on her face! ;)

A Fun Day in Orchard Road

The sun was shining brightly when the beach boy and the mermaid greeted the shoppers, tourists and Singaporeans in Orchard Road today. They sent out brochures about Great Barrier Reef as well as their name cards to these peeps happily. Sometimes they even had a chance to talk to them, explaining some highlights of "The Best Job in The World".

The mermaid (who's the mermaid? me, of course! LOL) learned a lot from today's experience. Some people reacted nicely when Greg, the other shortlisted applicant for The Best Job in The World, and I approached them, but... sometimes we got nasty responses, too! Ouch!!! When Greg came to an old lady and said, "Hi aunty, have you heard of the Best Job in The World?". She shouted, "No. I don't have time for that!!!" Woooo... okay, Auntie.. understood :(

As for me, I approached a guy who passed by with his kid. I spent sometime talking with him about Great Barrier Reef and The Best Job in The World. In the end, I said, "You can also vote for me by clicking this link". He replied, "I only know you for 5 minutes. And I'm not gonna vote for anyone". Ouch!!! :( --> me.. disappointed :(

Now I know how it feels when people giving out brochures and I often refused to take them (because I would throw it to the garbage bin anyway, so might as well not to take it, otherwise I'd just create more trashes in this world!). But now... learning from today's experience, I will take the brochures from anyone who offers ones on the street. It won't hurt taking and reading it, anyway! :)

Having said that, fortunately, most of the people that we greeted reacted positively. Some of them were curious about the whole campaign and asked questions such as, "And you got paid from snorkeling, kayaking and doing all those fun activities?". I said, "Yeah!!! It's the best job in the world, indeed!!! Don't you think?"

The mermaid and the beach boy definitely had a lot of fun today. Some friends of ours also helped us out giving away our name cards. Thank you, guys!

I hope they will keep our name cards and check out the links once they reach home! So, hmm.. what d'ya think of our outfits today? ;)

A Mermaid in Orchard Road!

For those who live in Singapore, be prepare for seeing a Mermaid with spiky hair and a guy swimming in wetsuit in Orchard Road tomorrow!!!

Do you want to meet them in person? Heyyy.. good news! You could meet them on:

Day/Date : Saturday, March 21st, 2009
Place : The Hereen shopping mall, Orchard Road
Time : 12.00pm - 2pm

Seriously :).

Ok, this isn't a joke. It's for real! Greg, the other finalist from Singapore and me are going to promote "The Best Job in The World" and the Great Barrier Reef in Orchard Road. So, please come, drop by and say hi to us!

See you tomorrow!!!

Another Media Coverage

I just got the scanned article on "The Best Job in The World" that was published in Banjarmasin Post a while ago.

I was surprised to see the picture! Why? Because I thought the publication would use the picture from my blog, but instead, they decided to use the picture that they took during "Pesta Blogger" back in 2007 where I became one of the guest speakers to share about my insights as a traveler, blogger and travel blogger :).

Enjoy the article! Sorry that it's in Indonesian language! Do you want me to translate it for you? ;D

The Best Job in The World: Interview with Cosmopolitan FM

Today, I had an interview with Cosmopolitan FM. The host told me that it was a pity that I was in Singapore, otherwise, she would've invited me to conduct the interview at the radio station in Jakarta. That's why, today's interview was conducted via phone.

I was interviewed for the "Fun Fearless Female" program. It's a program starting from 10.00am - 2pm, Monday to Friday, targeting to modern women who are fun and fearless! ;) This program discusses topics from fashion, beauty, lifestyle, to business and self improvement! The host is Irina and she was my senior in my university ;). She opened the interview by saying:

"When I read the news about The Best Job in The World, I thought... Wow, this job is really cool! Then when I kept on reading the article, I found out that one of the finalists are from Indonesia... and she's Nila Tanzil. Omigod... she is my friend!!! Listeners, Nila is a true travel addict. She's petite, but very dynamic and energetic.. and she travels all the time! She loves outdoor activities, no wonder that her skin is glowingly tanned! Every time I check on her facebook, I always find her new travel pictures here and there... makes me jealous! Do you want to know her? She's in Singapore now but we get a chance to speak to her over the phone... Hi, Nilaaaa..."

"Hi Irina...", I said. I had to laugh to hear her opening, because we went to the same university together, so she knows me pretty well! That's why she has those detailed info on me coz we're friends. Hahaha...

"Apakabar, booo?", Irina said. (meaning: how are you, mate?)

(then the interview began).

She asked me several things, such as: what's the story of my application for The Best Job in The World, why did I apply, what are the tasks if I get the job, etc.

It was a fun 5-10 minutes on air. We had such a good laugh and when I shared the information of the task of the "Island Caretaker", she said, "Wooowww.. it is the best job in the world! We hope you'll get it, Nila! You really make us proud!"

Then she commented, "Nila, if you got that job, I'm sure your skin would get even darker!"

"Hahaha... I bet, yeah!!! Love it!", I said.

Then she asked the listeners to vote for me :) (http://www.islandreefjob.com/nila).

Well, thank you, Cosmo FM and Cosmo listeners! It was such a great fun being featured in the "Fun Fearless Female"! Hope to speak to you again real soon! ;)

Beautiful Cavern Dive in Koh Haa, Thailand

One of the main reasons why I decided to go to Koh Lanta is for... scuba-dive!!!
There are some nice dive spots around the island, in which are easier to reach from Koh Lanta than from Koh Phi Phi.

My first day of scuba-dive in Koh Lanta, I dove with Lanta Scuba dive center. The owner is Matt, a Dutch guy, partnering with Marc, also Dutch. And guess what... that day, there were 9 people on the boat and all of them are Dutch except me and Ian, my English dive master! 3 of them were open water students + 1 advanced open water student + 2 dive instructors + 1 dive master trainee + me + 1 dive master. And.. all of them were guys!!! (I wonder where were the girls?) It was pretty interesting to be on a speed boat surrounded with only Dutch people. It really reminded me of my study time in Amsterdam, where I spent two years of my life. It was nice to hear the Dutch speaking their own language and we talked about places in The Netherlands. Ah.. they made me miss my school time in Amsterdam!

Ok, enough nostalgia. The best thing of diving with Lanta Scuba was... I got my own dive master! Wow! Very luxurious, eh? Apparently, Lanta Scuba decided to dedicate 1 dive master only for me, because the rest of the people were students. So, it wouldn't be fair for me if I joined them. Yayyy... I had no complain with that! In fact, I was very happy as I never had a dive master only for myself! Hihihi.. :P

We went to Koh Haa, a dive spot that famous for its cave known as "The Cathedral". It took us 45 minutes by speed boat to get here from Koh Lanta. Koh Haa itself means 5 islands. It's beautiful and looks like a smaller version of Phi Phi Ley. In one of the islands, there's a small beach, which can only be reached by swimming from the boat. "Would be nice to have lunch there", I thought. Unfortunately the water was very choppy that day, so it was pretty dangerous to swim there! :( Oh well... We even had to struggle having our lunch in such choppy water. Some of us felt sea sick even before we got to the dive spot! :D I had to drink a few glasses of soft drink with ice, in which I rarely do (yup, i'm not a big fan of soft drinks!), just to prevent myself from getting those annoying sea-sick! (try it, believe me.. it works!)

The first dive was in Koh Haa Lagoon. It was just so-so, only the usual suspects. But, the second dive was interesting. We dove in Koh Haa Yai. It was a cavern dive and we dove for... 75 minutes! Yayyy!!! I was happy because Ian was also good with air consumption, so both of us could dive... forever! :D (err.. not really forever as in forever... but yeah.. u know what I mean). It was the longest dive I've ever had :).

I got scared when entering the first cavern. It was pitched dark! And we forgot to bring a torch, so we couldn't see anything. As soon as we entered the cave, I grabbed Ian's arm right away! Hahaha.. The second cavern was nice. There were two entrances and a chamber in which we could go up to the surface and breath normally (yep... u can take off the regulator from your mouth!). We spent more than 5 minutes in the chamber, thus, our dive computers counted it as a new dive when we started to descend again. LOL. Oh... I LOVED CAVERN DIVE!!!

The water was 28 degrees celcius, the visibility wasn't that good.. around 7 - 10 meters. We dove down to 20.7 meters on the first dive and 21.8 meters on the second dive. Didn't see any big pelagic fish, but saw some big nudibranchs in black and purple, in which I've never seen such types and in huge size before, barracudas, scorpion fish, orange-line cardinal fish and some other usual suspects. The cavern dive was really cool. LOVED IT! Did I already say it? LOVED IT LOVED IT LOVED IT!!! :D

Koh Lanta, Thailand

Thailand: (January 10th - 16th, 2009)

Ok, while waiting for the result of "The Best Job in The World", I thought I should continue writing posts on my Thailand trip.

After my fabulous time in Koh Phi Phi, I took a ferry to Koh Lanta for 1.5 hours. When I got there, my first impression was, "Wow.. this island still has so much space!". Unlike Phi Phi which is much smaller and the down town area is pretty cramped with souvenir shops, restaurants, bars and dive centers, Koh Lanta is totally different. The island has a reputation of being a kick-back island where couples and families can spend their days lazying on hammocks by the empty beach. Even Sala Dan, the down town area, isn't crowded. There are some restaurants and souvenir shops, but compared to the space, it looks pretty quiet. Most of the dive centers are located here, too. Some of the big dive centers have branches by the beach, but they close pretty early, though. It's best to book your dive trip before 5pm, if you wanted to book it from the ones on the beach. Otherwise, you have to go by taxi to the downtown area and choose one of the dive shops there.

The main islands in Koh Lanta are Koh Lanta Yai and Koh Lanta Noi. However, all resorts and activities are centered in Koh Lanta Yai. The western coast of the island has the best beaches. I spent an afternoon in Ao Kantiang, which is considered as one of the best beaches in Koh Lanta. It's located on the further south and it took me almost 50 minutes to get there by taxi (aka tuk-tuk) from Long Beach, where I stayed.

When I was negotiating on the price with the taxi driver, there was a five year old boy kept poking him. Apparently, this boy is his son. To my surprise, the son wanted to join me to the beach! Hahaha.. so, my journey to the beach was accompanied by a 5 year old Thai boy who looked so cute and wanted to be a Thai boxer when he grew up! He even wanted to play with me on the beach. How cute!

I didn't expect that the island would be that big. The road was all made of asphalt, but it got tougher when we're almost reached Ao Kantiang beach. On the southern end of the beach, there is a luxury Pimalai Resort and Spa. It's a five star resort sets in 40 hectares of tropical surroundings located on the hill. It's known as the most expensive resort on the island.

Ao Kantiang beach has a private feel as the beach isn't long, yet it's very relaxing to be there. Spending the whole afternoon sunbathing on the beach, I saw only 10 people at the most on the beach! Isn't it nice? There is also a nice cafe where one can grab drinks and meals by the beach. The cafe/restaurant is surrounded with greenery, it looks very exotic to me. It has a funny name, too.. "Same Same But Different"!!! Hahaha.. what a name for a restaurant, huh?! Thai loves this phrase. I wonder why they always say "same same" for the word "same"?

The most famous beach in Koh Lanta is Hat Phra Ae. The beach is stretch to 4km long.. no wonder they call it the "Long Beach". Most of the resorts are located around this beach and
I was lucky enough to get a bungalow right by the beach! The view was very stunning every afternoon as I could enjoy the sunset from the terrace of my bungalow, laying on the hammocks until I fell asleep... :) How relaxing!

This is what I wrote on my travel journal:

"I'm sitting by the beach, enjoying a Thai banana chocolate pancake and mango lassi with a beautiful sunset before me. It's very peaceful here. Quiet... and the beach is nice, too. I can see almost 180 degrees of the horizon.. and as far as I could see is only the sea..."

I spent almost every afternoon enjoying the sunset by the beach. It was definitely the perfect spot to recharge my energy after scuba-diving! :)

If you wanted to go on holidays with your family, then Koh Lanta is the perfect place to go. The island has a chill vibe and nice ambience for families. I also didn't see that many working girls here, which was pretty "safe" for children, right? :) (you don't want your kids ask you weird questions in which you don't even know how to answer!)

I noticed that the cafes/bars in Koh Lanta has a romantic vibe with a dim light, they decorate the cafes with candles, lanterns and Christmas lights! I loved it. There is a good Italian pizzeria restaurant by the beach, called Mr. Wee Pizzeria, which quite popular among visitors judging from the numbers of customers they have every night. Out of curiousity, I tried the food there one night... and... yep, the food was yummy :).

Another good restaurant in the Long Beach area is Thai Cat. They have good Thai curries :). Mr Green is a local restaurant that opens for 24 hours. Apparently it's everyone's favorite, even for the locals :). The food is cheap, approximately 40 Baht per dish! And the taste? Mmm... delicious!!!

As for those who love to party, there are some nice beach bars. Try to go to "Klapa Klum" in Long Beach for a chill out vibe and good music. The bar has cool interior. I loved it. If you happen to be in Koh Lanta on Thursday night, go to "Ozone" as it seems that this place is known for its Thursday night parties. I went there once, invited by my divers buddies who live in the island. The place got packed after midnight and everyone had a lot of fun. Some people even danced on the table! Nice one!

I enjoyed the crowd as everyone seems to know everyone. Marc, one of the partners of Lanta Scuba, said that he always has problems everytime he has a cute guest and invites her/him to go out with the rest of the divers. Why? Because everyone will try to hit on her/him! Hahaha... I guess after living in an island for a while, the community gets smaller and smaller as you'll ended up knowing everybody. So, a newbie or hot diver/tourist would be the most wanted person on the island, huh? :D

How to get around? The easiest is by renting a motorbike, but pleaseeeee be very careful, because there were 3 people I know (in such a short time!) got in motorbike accidents! So, if one can't drive a motorbike or not so used to it, then it's safer to hop on a taxi ("tuk-tuk")... and don't forget to bargain on the price first! ;)
Also, be prepare to get dusty when you're on motorbike or taxi :). Well, I guess it won't be a problem since you can always take a dip on the beach anytime you feel like refreshing yourself, right? ;)

Ok now.. apart from chilling on the beach, enjoying good Thai food, what else can you do in Koh Lanta? Read on my next blog posts!

The Best Job in The World: Photo Shoot!

Yesterday morning, I took a cab heading to the Cavenagh Bridge in Singapore, bringing some of my dive gears with me. What was I up to?

Relax, guys... I wasn't going to jump in to the water or scuba-dive in the river there! :D LOL.

Indonesian Media Finally Covered "The Best Job In The World"

Finally Indonesian media covered the campaign of "The Best Job in The World" by Tourism Queensland. I've been wondering all these past few weeks, the news on this campaign hasn't hit the national media in Indonesia yet, while the media in other countries has already covered it and still!

I decided to pitch the story to Detik.com and here's the result! Yayyy!!!

Detik.com, one of the main online news portals in Indonesia published two articles on "The Best Job in The World".
Please click here to read the articles:

1) "WNI Lolos Kontes The Best Job in The World di Australia"
2) "Pemenang The Best Job in The World dibayar Rp 1.2 Milyar"

And another article in VivaNews, titled "Kontestan Asal Indonesia Masuk 50 Besar" in which you can read it here.

Hopefully there will be more articles appear in other Indonesian media soon! :)

Help Me To Get THE BEST JOB IN THE WORLD, Please!!!

INTERMEZZO!!!

"The Best Job in The World" is a program by Tourism Queensland to promote the Great Barrier Reef. It's such an interesting program, in which Tourism of Queensland will hire an island caretaker to experience living in Hamilton Island and traveling around the islands of the Great Barrier Reef for 6 months! What a job, huh? Not only that, the island caretaker has to write about the experiences and adventures on the blogs, photo diaries and videos! Wooohoooo... I loveeeee it!!!

A friend of mine, Jeff McCormack in Canada, sent me a message on my facebook about this wonderful job while I was in the middle of my holiday in Thailand. He said, "Nila... check this out. It's sooo you!"
When I opened the link, omigod! I got so excited! Flying back to Singapore for 3 days to take care a project there, I thought hard on how to create a video (everyone had to submit a profile video in less than 1 minute!) coz I had booked myself another trip to Cambodia!
How would I create a video when I was on holiday all alone?!!

Wanted to know what I did? I ran to a camera shop and bought myself a tripod. I thought, "I can do this!" So, there it goes... I flew to Cambodia and had an interesting holiday in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. Of course I had to spare sometime of my holiday to create a video for "The Best Job in The World!". And.. it wasn't easy! You know how those temples in Angkor area are always packed with tourists! I had to wait until there weren't too many tourists around or until those women selling drinks, scarfs, souvenirs, etc weren't yelling or screaming out loud, so that I could record the video. In some spots, there was no way to avoid the tourists. Heck. Then, I just shot it in front of them! Hahaha... (check out my video, when I was cleaning the temple, there were a lot of tourists watching and laughing at me! They must've thought I'm crazy! Lol)

Anyway, I submitted the video a few weeks ago. Last Thursday, 26th Feb, I got an email from the Tourism of Queensland saying that they're considering my video and I had to do an online psychometric test! Omigod... I couldn't sleep that night! I was so anxious, I even didn't go out on Friday and Saturday nights! :D

And guess what... this morning, I got an email from the Tourism Queensland again! The email said that I was chosen as one of the top 50 shortlisted applicants out of 34,000 applicants around the world!!! Whoaaaaaaaa... what a surprise!!! And... I'm the only Indonesian whose on the list of the top 50 applicants!

There's still a long way to go... after this, the Tourism Queensland will select 10 finalists plus 1 finalist who got the most votes to fly to Australia for the final interviews! So... please help me out to get this job! But wait.... how can you help?
